The Roost is a free academy in Donley County, Texas — chess, wrestling, tutoring, and mentoring, in a place where none of it existed before.
Opportunity shouldn’t depend on how far you live from town.
The Roost started in 2024 under a two-car carport, born out of a simple problem: there were too few after-school programs available. To fill the gap, A local dad bought a few chessboards, a set of wrestling mats, and invited anyone willing to show up and try.
Two years later, our community support keeps growing, but the deal remains the same: nobody pays to attend. We build the opportunities our students would otherwise have to leave town to find.

Operating principles, unchanged.
Endgames before openings, stance before takedowns, fractions before algebra. We teach the boring, load-bearing things first because they are what a student keeps.
Students are trusted with real challenges and clear feedback. Progress means meeting a higher standard, not being kept comfortable.
Families, coaches, and local supporters make the work possible. Everyone has a role in making the room feel like it belongs to the whole town.
We watch the work closely, name what needs practice, and celebrate improvement that can be seen—not just promised.
Discipline lasts longer when students want to return tomorrow. There is room here to laugh, play, and take pride in trying.
